This is my client James. James came in with twisted/combcoil dreadlocks. His hair is soft in texture and has a loose curl and a lot of it. While starting dreadlocks in this “traditional way” is perfectly fine on some hair types. James’s hair needed a little more motivation. His dreadlocks didn’t stay in long before they came undone. He also had a specific preference on what he wanted his dreads to look like. He wanted strong, neat, clean and mature looking dreadlocks that he can just live and let go. Now bear in mind, starting locks off as twists and having to keep up with them takes a lot of time and effort on your part and it can take up to 3 years for your dreadlocks to get matured to the point where you don’t have to fuss with it as much.

So here is where the “motivation” part comes in; I crocheted the hair and used varies other techniques to get the desired end result. We sped up the maturation process a bit. In the end we got James’ dreadlocks to look more mature, much less puffy, sturdy, and strong. These dreadlocks are going to need a lot more motivation to come undone.

Thank you for your link.. it is always nice to see how the dreadlock journey goes. It is not an easy one in the first year. You should be close to the point where you can just let it be and having fun with it. Thank you for that insight, much appreciated. 🙂
